About Me

Who am I? I’m the gal who inwardly chuckles when someone finds out I like to make things, and the person then asks, “What type of craft do you do?” I always want to answer, “Oh, honey, I do it all.”

I have always made things, from my elementary-school days when I made doll furniture from empty Jello boxes and created stationery by dying plain notepad paper with food coloring in my grandma’s bathroom sink. I learned to crochet at my mother’s knee and never tired of watching her make granny squares. But my whole world changed when I learned to sew in high school. I started making lots of my own clothes, partly to save money and partly to express my own style. I sewed all the home dec items for our first house and eventually discovered quilting. When my son was born, I delved into scrapbooking and cardmaking. And by the way, for several years, I ran my own cross-stitch design business.

When I told my husband I wanted to write a blog about the various things I make, I mentioned that I wasn’t sure how to marry all my different handmaking endeavors together on one site. Most crafting blogs focus on one particular craft, but I knew my blog would flit back and forth between all of my favorites. My husband, bless him, immediately saw the solution. “Your crafts always have a story. You make things for particular people, for particular reasons. Tell the stories behind what you make.”

So that’s what this blog is. I chose the name Memorable Makes because when I make things, I create memories for myself and for the person who receives the item I put my heart into creating. Just as I occasionally take out the shawl my mother crocheted for me as a child and spend a few minutes remembering her, I hope that the ones I love remember that when I made something for them, I did it because they are so special to me.

When you visit me here, I’ll tell you what I make, for whom and why. Of course, some of my makes are for me, so I’ll tell you why I chose those projects and materials in case you can find some inspiration through my selections. I’ll also incorporate some tales of what’s going on in my life at the time because those events are also woven into my memorable makes, whether they are happy or sad. I encourage your positive comments and look forward to getting to know you!
